Phase Noise Testing

PRECISION CONTROL PC400 Precision Control is manufacturing the PC400 for oscillator and crystal suppliers. It is the missing link that nobody has addressed to make phase noise measurements and jitter calculations. It provides the supplier with the low noise/low jitter standard that is necessary when making two source phase noise measurements. All the user needs is a crystal of the same frequency as the oscillator or the crystal under test. The PC400 works with all commercially available phase noise measurements systems including the Agilent Technologies E5501B, Aeroflex PN9500 or the Femtoseconds Systems FSS1000E. The two source method is required when making phase noise and jitter calculations. All other methods, for example, the one source method that uses the unit under test and a delay line will not measure the oscillator or crystal noise accurately because the in-close noise floor of the system is higher than the worst crystal or crystal oscillator. The PC400 Phase Noise Test Station provides the Reference Oscillator for any frequency between 4 MHz and 880 MHz to test clock oscillators and crystals. All the user needs to supply is a crystal of the exact frequency (above 220 MHz, 1/4 the exact frequency) as the unit under test. In the two source method the reference oscillator must have lower noise than the crystal or oscillator under test. The best frequency synthesizer can NOT provide the low noise required and cannot be used as the reference source. THE PC400 IS THE ONLY INSTRUMENT MANUFACTURED TO PROVIDE REFERENCE OSCILLATORS FROM 4 MHz TO 880 MHz THAT HAS LOWER PHASE NOISE THAN PRESENTLY MANUFACTURED CLOCK CRYSTALS AND OSCILLATORS. When the PC400 can be purchased as complete turn-key system, using the Agilent Technologies, or other manufacture’s phase noise system, the PC400 supplies all the necessary cables, low noise amplifiers, power meter, and attenuators. The PC400 can also be supplied without the phase noise measurement system, as shown in the attached specification. With training, the system can be operated by production line personal.
